west norriton HISTORY

Long before European settlers arrived, the area that is now West Norriton was inhabited by the Lenape people. Their presence is a testament to the rich indigenous history of the region. As European settlers began to explore and establish colonies, the Lenape way of life faced significant challenges.

The colonial era saw the arrival of European settlers, with the Norriton Presbyterian Church being founded in 1712. This marked the beginning of organized European settlement in the area. The township was officially established in 1784, named after the Norriton Presbyterian Church which played a crucial role in the community's early development.

West Norriton, like many areas in Pennsylvania, experienced the transformative impact of the Industrial Revolution. Mills and factories sprung up along the Schuylkill River, contributing to the township's economic growth. The construction of the Schuylkill Canal and later the arrival of the railroad further fueled industrial expansion.

During the Civil War, West Norriton, like many communities, felt the impact of the conflict. The township contributed its fair share of soldiers to the Union cause. Post-war, the community continued to evolve, with new industries emerging and the landscape transforming to accommodate a growing population.

The 20th century brought about significant changes in West Norriton's landscape. Suburbanization became a prominent trend, leading to residential developments and a shift away from the industrial focus of previous decades. Schools, parks, and community institutions flourished, contributing to the vibrant and close-knit character of the township.

West Norriton boasts a variety of historic landmarks and heritage sites that provide a window into its past. The Norriton Presbyterian Church, the Schuylkill Canal, and other architectural gems stand as tangible reminders of the township's rich history.
