Oreland History

Oreland’s name originates from the ore deposits discovered in the area. In the late 1600s, large lime deposits were discovered by Thomas Fitzwater right in his own backyard. Eager to capitalize on his discovery, he erected a kiln and began to process the lime. Fitzwater’s hard work attracted William Penn, the founder of Pennsylvania. Once visiting the lime deposits, Penn recognized the area’s potential and ordered a highway from the Delaware River to the Fitzwater’s kiln. The highway was named the Limekiln Pike and it is still used today as Pennsylvania Route 152.

William Penn fell in love with Oreland’s Springfield Township and made it home to one of his original manors.

The Great Outdoors

Oreland is home to the scenic Piszek Preserve, a beautiful trail along the Sandy Run Creek. The preserve is home to almost forty acres of lush greenery and wetlands. Families are welcome to enjoy biking, dog walking, and birding, and other fun activities.

A short drive outside of the city will lead you to the Wissahickon Valley Park Trail System, a lush trail spanning almost nine miles. This woodland trail is suitable for walking, jogging, and biking and follows Wissahickon Creek. An old, abandoned Turnpike renamed the Forbidden Drive Trail is also connected to this extraordinary trail.

The Emlen House, a Treasured Piece of History

Adjacent to the Piszek Preserve is the Emlen House. Formerly used as George Washington’s headquarters, this slice of American history is now a part of Copernicus Society of America. Following its construction in the late 1700s, the Emlen House was restored in 1974 following a devastating fire.
