Perkiomen HISTORY
The Perkiomen Valley, initially inhabited by the Lenni-Lenape Tribe, became part of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania on March 4, 1681, following a declaration by King Charles II. In 1720, the region witnessed the establishment of Pennsylvania's first copper mine near Schwenksville. Offering fertile land for crop cultivation and livestock, the Perkiomen Valley played a crucial role in sustaining both colonists and Native Americans, ultimately contributing to the provisions for troops during the Revolutionary War. Notably, George Washington's troops were stationed in Valley Forge during this war.
In 1784, Montgomery County was formed, incorporating land previously owned by Philadelphia. Subsequent territorial developments occurred in 1879 with the creation of Limerick Township and the 1886 split of Skippack and Perkiomen Townships into Skippack Township and Perkiomen Township. Perkiomen Township later divided into Lower Perkiomen Township and Upper Perkiomen Township.
