The Wyncote Historic District, added as a US Historic District in October of 1986, is located along Greenwood Avenue extending between Washington Lane to the East and Rices Mill Road to the West. It was made a historic district for its Architecture, Community Planning, and Development. The district covers over 100 acres, and 178 contributing buildings. The winding, tree-lined roadways and century old homes make it arguably one of the most beautiful residential communities in the area.
The Wyncote Historic District has a number of restored Victorian-era homes. The All Hallows Church (constructed 1896–1897) was designed by a firm founded by Philadelphia architect Frank Furness (Furness, Evans and Company). Wyncote also has a number of classical Philadelphia stone colonial revival homes; notable among them is Beechwood, designed in the school of Brognard Okie, the architect responsible for the reconstruction of Pennsbury Manor on the upper Delaware River, and Appleford in Villanova, Pennsylvania.
It is important to note the historic zoning of these homes if you are thinking of buying here. … the area was discovered in the second half of the nineteenth century by wealthy industrialists and capitalists who made it the first Gilded Age suburb. This lecture follows the development of the land from William Penn’s green countryside, through Gilded Age resort, to the village for “the rest of us.” Nationally known bee-keepers, international bankers, entrepreneurial congressmen and dabblers in the novel sport of professional baseball made the community we know as Wyncote today. They flocked to the new village for the clean air, lush landscapes, and picturesque rolling countryside that promised “calm contentment and restful influences of country homes.”
